As part of this commitment, SPS worked with S&J Consulting to improve our systems and documentation, in preparation for applying for ISO certifications for:

·         Quality Management (ISO 9001);

·         Occupational Health and Safety (ISO 45001); and

·         Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001).

Following rigorous assessment (including interviews and an ISO auditor reviewing our systems and processes), we are proud to announce we have met all associated criteria and requirements to achieve global accreditations in all of the above.

SPS is now officially ISO certified across several integral areas!

Tony Rutter, Managing Director at SPS, said he is proud of the work SPS has done to become ISO compliant.

“Achieving ISO certification validates that SPS adheres to global standards of quality assurance – that’s something we are really proud to share with our staff and customers,” Mr Rutter said.

“This formally demonstrates that we conduct ourselves efficiently and strive for high quality and will help reduce the compliance work we need to undertake with our clients – streamlining the way we work and how people access our services.

“It’s just another reason we are a step ahead of our competitors,” Mr Rutter said.

Secure Power Solutions was able to apply for ISO certification, thanks to a National and International Standards Compliance grant (part of The Local Capability Fund) through the WA Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation.

According to the International Labour Organization, more than 7,600 people die from work-related accidents or diseases every single day. That’s why an ISO committee of occupational health and safety experts set to work to develop an International Standard with the potential to save almost three million lives each year.

SPS is proud to align its policies, procedures, and practices with this critical, global safety standard.

ISO 14001 – Environmental Management Systems

As well as just being the responsible thing to do, considering ways to minimise harmful impacts on the environment is becoming increasingly important to meeting regulatory requirements.

ISO 14001 is an internationally recognised set of standards designed to help organisations improve their environmental performance through more efficient use of resources and reduction of waste. Specifically, ISO 14001 provides practical tools for companies to manage their environmental responsibilities, by asking them to analyse and identify opportunities to encourage sustainability in their supply chains, and look for new ways of operating to optimise environmental management strategies

At Secure Power Solutions (SPS), we are known for providing critical power services to a range of clients across Australia. We love the work we do and the clients we support, and our commitment to providing independent, quality advice and services has helped our company to grow.

In fact, this year (2023), SPS has been nominated for a Telstra Best of Business Award for Outstanding Growth which we are really excited about…but that’s a different story.(More to come on that later!)

The story we want to share here is about how a small article in a local paper identified an opportunity for us to support two causes close to our hearts – giving back to the community who have helped us to grow and reducing our environmental footprint.

In 2021, Tony Rutter, Managing Director at SPS, read an article in the local paper about the Wanneroo Community Men’s Shed – a non-profit organisation committed to advancing the health and wellbeing of its members and encouraging greater social inclusion through participating in community activities.

Specifically, this group of men (mostly aged 65yrs and over), along with people from disadvantaged backgrounds and their carers, work to refurbish and recycle donated computers and make them available at reduced prices for those in need and community groups. They also strip old electrical equipment down to their raw materials for more efficient recycling.

At SPS, we are often asked to decommission Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) units. These units provide emergency power when the main electrical supply fails and are not dissimilar to a desktop computer in the way they are built.

“Traditionally, when asked to dispose of UPS units, we would remove the battery for recycling and send the rest to a scrap merchant,” said Tony Rutter.

“Unfortunately, a scrap merchant won’t always make the most of the materials or recycle appropriately so there can be a lot of wastage which goes into land fill. At the time, this was the only solution I was aware of for disposing these units.”

After reading the Wanneroo Times article, however, Tony saw an opportunity to do more and contacted the Wanneroo Community Men’s Shed to organise a collection.

SPS has now been donating items for over a year, most recently donating 20 UPS modules from a decommissioned data centre, south of Perth. 

“This time, we filled the trucks twice with all the equipment! It was a great feeling knowing the units wouldn’t just end up in landfill – the parts would be recycled properly, and we’d be giving back to the community that we live and work in,” said Tony.

“The Men’s Shed is a fantastic initiative and SPS is proud to support its efforts to recycle, reuse and repurpose, as well as engage and unite the community.

“Helping them to help others and our environment was an easy choice for us, and we’ll continue to support them whenever we can.”

This support for recycling, however, is not just a “one-off” event.

At Secure Power Solutions, our commitment to reducing waste goes beyond simply dividing our rubbish into different bins. We are genuinely committed to initiatives which minimise harm to the environment.

That’s why we are working to align our practices with best practice and seeking ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems) accreditation. ISO 14001 is an internationally recognised set of standards designed to help organisations improve their environmental performance through more efficient use of resources and reduction of waste.

An IT systems integrator working for a State Government agency with remote locations from Bunbury to Carnarvon and South Hedland.

Our client had an opportunity to bid on work with the Government agency to supply and install new UPS systems at remote locations across Western Australia.

As a systems integrator, they were able to provide the hardware, but they didn’t have the skills in-house to deploy the solutions across the State. Without this skill set, they were unable to bid on the work. They needed an experienced partner that they could trust to work with them.

The Secure Power Solutions’ team worked with the client at the bid stage to identify and cost potential risks. Upon contract award, Secure Power Solutions’ technicians flew to the remote towns, decommissioned and removed the end-of-life UPS systems, then assembled and installed the new solution featuring the latest APC Lithium UPS and extended run batteries.

The old systems were made safe and taken to appropriate recycling centres or prepared for return to Perth if the locations didn’t have recycling facilities. The Secure Power Solutions’ team worked with the end user’s IT team to ensure the new system was connected to the IT network.

Partnering with Secure Power Solutions enabled the client to bid for (and win!) contracts they previously were ineligible to apply for.

Secure Power Solutions understood the end user’s requirements and was able to carry out both the electrical installation works and the configuration for the new system. This meant the customer didn’t have to send staff to remote sites, which saved them time while getting the expertise the needed.
